This is not Sheikh Hasina's Bangladesh, and India has to understand that: Asif Nazrul

Asif Nazrul, the law affairs adviser, has criticised the Indian government for its inability to ensure the security of the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh located in Agartala, the capital of Tripura state.

On Monday night, a post on his verified Facebook page saw him delivering a sharp critique of the Indian authorities for their oversight, emphasising that India must understand that “this is not Sheikh Hasina’s Bangladesh.”

On Monday, the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh, located in Agartala, Tripura, experienced a breach.

The assault was executed by adherents of the pro-Hindutva organisation Hindu Sangharsh Samiti in conjunction with individuals from various other aligned factions.

On the same day, a demonstration was held by several hundred members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) near the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The Hindu Sangharsh Samiti operates as an affiliated Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) organisation.

The Ministry of External Affairs in India has expressed that the breach of premises at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala is “deeply regrettable.”

The statement emphasised that diplomatic and consular properties must remain protected and not be targeted under any circumstances. The government is implementing measures to enhance security protocols for the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and their Deputy and Assistant High Commissions across the nation.

In a recent development, the Bangladesh government expressed strong disapproval of the violent demonstration and attack carried out by a significant group of protesters from the Hindu Sangharsh Samity of Agartala at the premises of the Assistant High Commission.

On Monday, the foreign ministry of Bangladesh issued a statement, “The accounts conclusively attest that the protesters were allowed to aggress into the premises by breaking down the main gate of Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in a pre-planned manner.”

“This specific incident in Agartala breaches the sanctity of diplomatic missions, as stipulated by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961,” it stated.

Asif Nazrul reported on Facebook today that the assistant high commission of Bangladesh in Agartala, India, was vandalised, with the national flag being set ablaze. Members of the Hindu Sangharsh Samiti engaged in an act that has drawn widespread condemnation.

Asif Nazrul raised a provocative question in his recent post, contemplating how India might have engaged in aggressive propaganda had an incident occurred involving an organisation called ‘Muslim Sangharsh Samiti’ in Bangladesh.

The legal affairs adviser stated that under international law, the Indian government must ensure complete security for the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh located on Indian soil.

He says the Indian government has been criticised for failing to address the issue. He expressed strong disapproval of this failure.

Asif Nazrul took to Facebook to express his condemnation of a statement made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

He expressed that India, along with Mamata, ought to feel a sense of shame regarding the treatment of minority communities and Dalits across various regions of the country.

Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, India, has adopted a firm position regarding the plight of minorities in Bangladesh and has called for action from the United Nations.

During a state assembly session today, the West Bengal Chief Minister stated, “We propose that the central government urges the United Nations to send peacekeeping troops to Bangladesh.”

Asif Nazrul highlights India’s stance: “… we believe in friendship based on equal dignity and rights.”

The author contends that Sheikh Hasina’s government has displayed a subservient attitude towards India to maintain its hold on power without a vote. India must understand that the situation differs from that of Sheikh Hasina’s Bangladesh. Bangladesh is an independent and sovereign nation with a profound sense of dignity. This is a Bangladesh characterised by its fearless youth.
