A new "study mode" is added by ChatGPT

OpenAI has introduced a new ‘study mode’ for ChatGPT, designed to assist students in their learning process instead of simply delivering answers. The feature is now accessible to all users, including those with free accounts, and will soon be rolled out to ChatGPT Edu, a tailored version of the AI tool designed for educational institutions.

OpenAI has introduced a new feature that responds to ongoing debates regarding the role of AI in education. This development comes amid concerns that tools such as ChatGPT could hinder the learning process by providing answers too rapidly. OpenAI reports that Study Mode opts for interactive prompts and techniques such as Socratic questioning, rather than giving direct answers, to foster critical thinking among users.

The feature evaluates a student’s knowledge through a series of initial questions. It then tailors explanations by deconstructing complex topics into more digestible segments, while also integrating knowledge checks to bolster comprehension. During conversations, users have the option to enable or disable the mode as they see fit.

In a notable collaboration with educators and learning scientists, OpenAI has announced that Study Mode integrates research-backed teaching methodologies. OpenAI recognises that the current version has its limitations, as it depends on system instructions instead of being fully integrated into the AI model, potentially resulting in inconsistencies. The company intends to enhance the feature by incorporating user feedback, with upcoming enhancements set to include more personalised learning experiences, improved progress tracking, and more precise visual explanations for intricate concepts.

The release highlights an ongoing dialogue regarding the need to balance the educational advantages of AI with the potential risks associated with excessive dependence on technology.
