Goalkeeper Alisson has called on his Liverpool teammates to “create our own history” as they pursue the Premier League title in their inaugural season under manager Arne Slot.
Slot’s Reds currently hold a six-point advantage at the summit of the table, boasting a game in hand over their closest rivals, Arsenal, who sit in second place.
Allison, the Brazil international, played a crucial role in the Liverpool squad that clinched the Premier League title during the 2019-20 season under the management of Jurgen Klopp, marking the end of the club’s 30-year drought for a top-flight championship.
“That team was truly exceptional,” Alisson remarked. “Significant accomplishments were made.” The Premier League title had eluded the team for an extended period, marking a significant achievement with this victory.
“We secured the Champions League title together, as well as the previous season.”
Both situations are incomparable.
“The source of my happiness lies within this group of players; we possess the quality necessary to achieve something remarkable.” Winning requires a significant level of commitment, and that essential dedication is present.
Alisson stands out as one of the nine players to have represented Liverpool this season, having also been a part of the squad during the 2019-20 campaign.
The squad includes goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Andrew Robertson, midfielders Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones, and forward Mohamed Salah.
The team has undergone significant changes, welcoming new talents like Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister to the midfield, alongside forwards Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo in the attacking lineup.
Dutchman Slot, who moved from Feyenoord during the summer transfer window, has adopted a more calculated tactical strategy.
Alisson expressed his views: “I don’t think it is too similar [to our style under Klopp].”
“Several players remain with the team, but we have adopted a slightly different style, focusing more on ball possession.” Previously, the situation was quite clear-cut, characterized by numerous transitions and a significant level of intensity.
Liverpool secured their league title under Klopp by maintaining a significant lead for much of the season. However, they experienced a dramatic turnaround the previous year as Manchester City overturned a 10-point deficit to claim the championship.
Slot’s side will travel to West Ham on Sunday with the opportunity to further extend their current lead.
“There’s no need for us to draw comparisons with previous teams,” Alisson stated.
“This season, it is imperative that this group forges its own narrative.”
