One entrepreneur has found an unexpected opportunity in the wake of Donald Trump‘s aggressive rhetoric directed at Canada. The new U.S. president’s confrontational stance has sparked a creative idea for this business owner.
Liam Mooney, the founder of a design firm in Ottawa, created a hat featuring the phrase “Canada is Not for Sale.” This initiative directly responds to President Trump’s threats regarding tariffs and his proposals suggesting that Canada could become the 51st state of the United States.
The hats captured public interest following Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s decision to don one during a recent meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and fellow premiers in Ottawa. The gathering focused on President Trump’s promise to impose tariffs on Canadian imports.
Mooney reports that there has been a surge in online orders, with tens of thousands of hats being purchased since that time.
Mooney informed that he crafted the hats as a creative response to President Trump’s rhetoric, to penetrate political discourse through a message centred on nationalism and unity.
“This event serves as a platform to unite individuals from across the spectrum of civil society, irrespective of their political affiliations,” Mooney stated.
Amidst a backdrop of political upheaval in Canada, former President Trump is raising the prospect of tariffs again. This comes as Liberal leader Justin Trudeau prepares to step down in March after nearly ten years in office, while the opposition Conservative Party is gaining momentum in the polls ahead of the upcoming federal election later this year.
Mooney revealed that he and his business partner created the hats following a recent interview with Ford on Fox News. The host pressed the premier to contemplate annexation, proposing that it would be a “privilege” for Canada to unite with the U.S.
Ford has made it clear that Canada is not on the market.
During a video address to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, Trump asserted his demand for respect from Canada. He has referred to Trudeau as “Governor” in the past.
Mooney stated, “Our sovereignty is compromised when our dignity is not respected.” “Allies and friends across the globe stand prepared to respond to the call, ready to defend and unite with us.”
