Alex Ferguson, the most successful manager in Manchester United‘s history, is set to conclude his role as a global ambassador following the termination of his multi-million-pound contract by the club’s part-owners, INEOS.
Ferguson, a longstanding presence in the Old Trafford director’s box, agreed with Manchester United in 2013 to serve as a club ambassador, earning an annual salary of 2.16 million pounds ($2.82 million).
An insider has revealed that the separation was amicable, noting that the 82-year-old Ferguson is stepping back from several time-consuming responsibilities. The source emphasized that he will always be welcome at Old Trafford.
United has implemented widespread job cuts as part of its cost-saving strategy, a response to ongoing financial losses that the club has been facing for an extended period.
Ferguson, set to conclude his ambassadorial role at the season’s end, guided United to an impressive tally of 38 trophies, which encompasses 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League victories before he retired from management in 2013.
United finds itself in 14th place, following a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season, marking their worst performance to date. This comes despite an investment of over 200 million pounds in new players during the close season.
Since taking the helm at the start of the 2022-23 season, under scrutiny, Dutch manager Erik ten Hag has overseen an expenditure of approximately 600 million pounds on new players.
The impact of the cost-cutting measures on other United ambassadors, such as former players Andy Cole, Park Ji-sung, Dwight Yorke, Denis Irwin, and Bryan Robson, remains uncertain.
