In a significant political development, Ghana’s former President, John Dramani Mahama, has successfully returned to power, securing victory in the presidential election. This comes after his opponent, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, acknowledged his defeat on Sunday.
During a press conference held at his residence, Bawumia announced that he had reached out to Mahama to extend his congratulations, noting that Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) also emerged victorious in the parliamentary election.
“The data from our internal collation of the election results indicate that former President John Dramani Mahama has decisively won the Presidential election,” stated Bawumia.
The NDC has secured victory in the parliamentary election. While we are still waiting for the final tally of several seats, I believe these results will not alter the overall outcome.
Bawumia stated that he conceded before announcing the official results to alleviate tensions.
Before his concession, reports emerged of altercations at various local constituency centres as results continued to come in from polling stations.
Bawumia stated, “I am delivering this concession speech before the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to mitigate further tension and maintain the peace of our nation.”
“He emphasised the necessity for the global investor community to maintain its confidence in Ghana’s peaceful and democratic nature,” he stated. “The electorate has expressed a clear desire for change, and we acknowledge that decision with utmost respect.”
