Google Photos will now more closely resemble Microsoft Photos

Microsoft is deploying a new update to its Photos application on Windows 11, which introduces AI-driven auto-categorisation, a feature traditionally associated with Google Photos, the photo storage application.

A new Windows Insider Blog indicates that the upgrade, accessible on Copilot+ PCs across all Insider channels, uses AI to categorise photos into four classifications: screenshots, receipts, identification papers, and notes.

In contrast to conventional folder systems, the model can identify documents irrespective of the language. A Hungarian passport will still be recognised as a passport, regardless of whether the content is in English, according to Microsoft.

Although the initial categories are restricted to four, users will have the capability to search and filter the library instantaneously, manually change categories, and provide input to enhance precision. Microsoft stated that the functionality aims to improve efficiency and give the application a more utilitarian resource for daily use.

The upgrade also provides broader access to “Super Resolution,” a technique designed to enhance photo sharpness. This functionality is currently operational on smartphones utilising Snapdragon, AMD, and Intel CPUs.  Users will be required to download an extra model package before its activation.

The update requires app version 2025.11090.25001.0 or later from the Microsoft Store and is being deployed incrementally, which may take some time to reach all devices.
