Kompas newspaper reported on Tuesday that Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto is planning a five-country trip that includes visits to China and the United States. This journey comes just weeks after he assumed office, indicating his desire to engage actively in international affairs.
Prabowo officially assumed office on October 20, following a series of diplomatic engagements as president-elect, during which he visited 21 countries, including notable nations such as China, Japan, Russia, and Australia. The president has affirmed that his administration will uphold Indonesia’s longstanding commitment to a policy of non-alignment in foreign relations.
Kompas reports indicate that the former defense minister and special forces commander plans to visit China, the United States, Peru, Brazil, and Britain.
The foreign ministry has yet to respond to a request for comment, while a spokesperson for Prabowo’s office could not confirm whether the trip had been scheduled.
According to Kompas, Prabowo will make China his first stop as president, where he will interact with important people like his counterpart Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Qiang, and representatives of the National People’s Congress.
Following this, Kompas reports that he will travel to Washington for a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, though the precise dates of these visits are still unknown.
Prabowo’s arrival raises questions about whether the U.S. presidential election will determine a winner by November 5. The White House has yet to provide a response to the request for comment.
According to reports, Prabowo will travel to Peru for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit on November 14–15, then to Brazil for the G20 Summit on November 18–19.
