Is Potter feeling pressured after two games and eight goals given up?

West Ham remains a club that approaches managerial situations with a level head, avoiding any rush to judgment. We often rally behind our team, showing unwavering support and commitment as we navigate the challenges together.

In the aftermath of a disappointing 3-0 defeat to newly promoted Sunderland in their Premier League opener, Hammers vice-chair Karren Brady shared her thoughts on the match.

The club’s management and supporters were eager for a strong response in the showdown against Chelsea on Friday. What unfolded was a stunning 5-1 defeat on home turf, leaving the crowd in disbelief and echoing with boos as the final whistle blew.

Inside the London Stadium, the atmosphere shifted as numerous supporters chose to exit well before the final whistle, leaving a noticeable void in the stands.

While it’s premature to place a manager under scrutiny after merely two matches, the lacklustre displays from his team make it challenging to overlook the shortcomings. Defending Potter’s tenure since taking over from Julen Lopetegui in January is becoming increasingly complex.

With only five victories in 21 matches to his name, the pressure is mounting. After conceding three goals to Sunderland, West Ham has now allowed eight goals in their opening two games of the top-flight season, marking an unprecedented defensive struggle for the club.

In a historic low for the Hammers, Potter has become the first manager in Premier League history to fall short of double digits in points during his first 10 home matches. With a record of just two wins, three draws, and five defeats, he has managed to secure only nine points.

The ex-manager of Brighton and Chelsea is acutely aware that both he and his squad must elevate their performance. He remarked post-match, “It’s the reality, but we’ve had a tough week.”

“After two matches, we’ve found ourselves on the wrong end of eight goals conceded. There’s no sugarcoating it; this defensive performance needs a significant overhaul.”
