Indian Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has announced his resignation from the position effective immediately, citing medical reasons as the cause for his departure.
He submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, announcing that he would be stepping down immediately.
In a significant move, Dhankhar has announced his resignation as vice president of India, effective immediately. In his letter to the president, he cited the need to prioritise health care and adhere to medical advice, referencing Article 67(a) of the Constitution as the basis for his decision.
In August 2022, Dhankhar, aged 74, assumed office as the 14th Vice President of India.
Dhankhar, a lawyer by profession and the former governor of West Bengal, experienced a lengthy and frequently contentious term in office, characterised by numerous clashes with the government led by Mamata Banerjee.
He consistently criticised the Mamata government, addressing concerns related to alleged corruption, political violence, and the politicisation of institutions and universities in West Bengal.
Dhankhar has announced his resignation, stepping down two years before the conclusion of his five-year term.
