Mushfiqur and Shanto's hundreds give Bangladesh a commanding lead after Day 1

In a thrilling display of resilience, Bangladesh’s seasoned campaigner Mushfiqur Rahim and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto both notched up unbeaten centuries, steering the Tigers back on track after a challenging phase. Their stellar performances ensured a strong finish on Day 1 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium today.

Mushfiqur achieved a remarkable milestone with his 12th Test century, breaking a 14-innings drought, while Shanto secured his sixth Test tonne. Together, they forged an impressive 247-run partnership for the fourth wicket, marking Bangladesh’s highest stand for that wicket against Sri Lanka. The monumental partnership propelled Bangladesh from a precarious 45 for three in 16.1 overs to a commanding 292 for three at the close of play, showcasing their resilience throughout 90 overs.

This marks Mushfiqur’s third century against the island nation, showcasing his consistent performance on the international stage. He boasts a remarkable double century against Sri Lanka at this very venue, a feat he accomplished back in 2013.

Mushfiqur, displaying a hint of tension as he approached the 90s, finally reached the coveted three-figure mark off 176 balls, having struck only five boundaries along the way. His century came on the heels of skipper Shanto, who also achieved the three-figure milestone, marking his second tonne against Sri Lanka.

In a remarkable turn of events, Mushfiqur has finally broken free from a prolonged slump in form, marking a significant return to his best. His last century was a stunning 191 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi last year, showcasing his undeniable talent and resilience in the format. Since that time, Mushfiqur’s top score has been a 40-run performance against Zimbabwe during the Tigers’ most recent Test in Chattogram this past April.
