On the same day, a referendum and parliamentary election will take place: Chief adviser

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has presented the procedure for implementing the July National Charter, also known as the reform proposals.

He stated that the national legislative election and the referendum will take place concurrently.

Professor Muhammad Yunus announced this in a televised address to the country at 2:30 PM on Thursday.

The advisory council of the interim administration convened earlier today at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon, Dhaka, under the leadership of Professor Yunus.

Following the conference, the chief adviser delivered his address, which was broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV), BTV News, and BTV World.

On 28 October, the National Consensus Commission presented two proposals to the interim government, detailing potential strategies for implementing the July National Charter.

A proposal suggests that the government issue a special order to enact the constitutional change provisions of the Charter, followed by a referendum. Should the referendum endorse the proposed revisions, the subsequent parliament will function as a Constitution Reform Council and revise the Constitution within 270 days. Should parliament neglect to act within the stipulated timeframe, the proposed revisions will be automatically integrated into the Constitution.

The second recommendation is predominantly analogous, but it merely indicates that the reforms must be finalised within 270 days, without delineating the consequences of failing to meet the timeframe.

The Commission delegated the determination of the referendum’s scheduling to the administration. Political parties had previously exhibited differing perspectives regarding the execution of the July National Charter or reform ideas. Still, these discrepancies became more pronounced following the submission of the Commission’s recommendations.

Amidst ongoing discord, the interim government implored political parties to engage in dialogue and provide a cohesive directive to the government promptly. Nevertheless, the parties were unable to reach an agreement or engage in discussions. The government has resolved to go independently.
