Report: OpenAI's new video tool uses copyrighted content by default

OpenAI’s latest AI video generator, Sora 2, would automatically utilise copyrighted content from television and film studios unless rights holders expressly want to opt out, according to reports from Reuters and The Wall Street Journal.

The regulation indicates that footage from films and shows may be included in AI-generated movies produced by users unless copyright holders notify OpenAI to exclude their material, according to the reports.

As to the Reuters report, at least one prominent studio, Disney, has decided to withdraw. The strategy reflects OpenAI’s current stance on image production. It aligns with the company’s prior advocacy for classifying AI training on copyrighted material as “fair use” under US law, according to the reports.

OpenAI has introduced a social iOS application named Sora, enabling users to create, share, and remix AI-generated videos. The application features a ‘cameo’ function that allows users to embed realistic, AI-generated representations of themselves into videos after completing identification verification. Videos within the application may last up to 10 seconds and feature synchronised audio and sound effects.

According to its official blog, OpenAI states that Sora 2 signifies a substantial technical advancement, with enhanced physics simulation and the capability to manage intricate motions and repeated shots. The business also emphasised safety protocols, such as identity verification and user governance over AI-generated representations.

The Sora app is being launched only in the US and Canada via an invitation-only mechanism. OpenAI intends to offer the movie generator free of charge at its debut; however, it may implement fees subsequently based on demand and the computational resources required.
