Bangladesh’s prominent all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has officially declared his retirement from Test and Twenty20 cricket.
In a press conference held today, Thursday, the ace all-rounder made a significant announcement in anticipation of the upcoming Kanpur Test against India.
He is set to retire following the Test series against South Africa at home in October. He concluded his T20 career during the recent T20I World Cup, he noted.
In a recent statement regarding his future in ODI cricket, Shakib expressed his intention to continue playing until the upcoming Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to take place in Pakistan.
In response to an inquiry regarding his participation in the upcoming home series against South Africa, Shakib stated, ‘Look, I am available for the series.’ The current circumstances in the country have created a scenario where not everything is within my control. I have engaged in discussions regarding the matter with BCB. I communicated my intentions to them. The player expressed a strong sentiment, indicating that both the current series and the upcoming home series may mark the conclusion of their career in Test cricket.
Shakib addressed the media during a press conference in Kanpur today, providing insights ahead of Bangladesh’s second and final Test in Bangladesh’s ongoing tour of India.
When questioned about whether his retirement announcement stemmed from any resentment, Shakib stated that he believes it is the optimal moment to step away and allow newcomers the opportunity to showcase their abilities.
