The local social organisation, Mallika Samajkalyan Sangstha, located in Goaitula, Sylhet, organised a human chain on Tuesday, 28 October, at the Shah Eidgah playground, calling for the immediate cessation of the ongoing fair that has encroached on the ancient sports field.
Key Speaker Assaulted While Returning Home
Md. Sohail Chowdhury, the Cultural Affairs Secretary of the Bangladesh Socialist Party (BASD) Sylhet District Branch, served as the keynote speaker at the demonstration.
In his impassioned speech, Chowdhury proclaimed:
“Sports are the sole means to deter youth from drugs and detrimental activities.” Safeguarding this playground is essential for the ongoing practice of sports. Disregarding the threats posed by land-grabbers, all individuals must take to the streets to oppose these malevolent forces. I support you in this initiative to preserve the field.
He stated:
“Throughout my political career, I have opposed societal injustices against the prevailing norms—and no righteous endeavour of mine has ever been unsuccessful. This one will not either, God willing. However, we require your collective support.
Surprise Attack Following Demonstration
After the human chain, at approximately 7:30 PM, as Chowdhury was en route to Shibganj via Baluchar in a CNG auto-rickshaw, assailants hurled bricks and stones at the vehicle, seeking to vandalise it.
Due to the driver’s prompt decision-making, Chowdhury emerged unscathed and departed the location securely.
“This is not the inaugural instance,” Chowdhury informed Bangladesh Dias. “I have been assaulted numerous times with the intention to kill.”
Alleged Motive: Retaliation by Fair Operators
Initial investigations indicate that a group managing the fair at Shah Eidgah is responsible for instigating the attack.
“I assert that those who dread truth and justice cannot suppress us through intimidation,” Chowdhury stated via telephone. “This legitimate initiative to preserve the playground will persist—with community involvement.”
