As I enter Tver, the presence of soldiers immediately catches my attention.
They are ubiquitous, prominently displayed on billboards, the facades of buildings, and at bus stops. Portraits bearing the inscription “Hero of Russia” are prominently displayed. Posters featuring soldiers armed with Kalashnikov rifles urge the public to “Love, be proud of, and defend” Russia.
In essence, this means enlisting to participate in the conflict in Ukraine. Three years following its extensive invasion of the neighbouring country, Russia is actively pursuing recruits.
Amidst the pervasive military imagery throughout Tver, residents can find a way to perceive their daily lives as usual. The front line lies hundreds of miles distant.
“Take a moment to observe,” Mikhail, a teacher from the area, remarks. Vehicles are moving along the road, and all the stores are operating as usual. There are no shells descending from any location. There is no cause for alarm among us. No sirens can be heard wailing. There is no movement towards any designated evacuation points.
For numerous Russians, the invasion of Ukraine – referred to by the Kremlin as a “special military operation” – is an event that exists primarily within the confines of their television screens.
However, the situation feels significantly more tangible for individuals such as Anna.
“I know many individuals who have gone off to fight,” Anna remarks as we converse on the street.
Several individuals did not return home. “There is a strong desire for the conflict to conclude swiftly.”
Donald Trump asserts that this is also his desire. The Trump administration has initiated direct discussions with Russian leadership, notably excluding Ukraine from the negotiating process.
How do Russians perceive the US president and his attempts to engage with Moscow?
Anna asserts that Trump is a dark horse in the political landscape. “There is uncertainty surrounding what to anticipate from him.”
“Our objective is the complete surrender of Ukraine.”
In conversations with residents of Tver, a recurring theme emerges: many echo the official narrative propagated by state television over the past three years. They assert that Russia is not the aggressor, framing the country’s actions as a defence of Russians and Russian speakers in Ukraine, characterising their presence as liberating rather than occupying.
Russian society as a whole does not necessarily embrace this alternative reality.
Andrei Kolesnikov, a columnist for newtimes.ru and Novaya Gazeta, asserts that individuals in society tend to gravitate towards the mainstream. “In a landscape where mainstream narratives are pro-war and media outlets proclaim a conflict with the West, the typical citizen is likely to adopt this perspective.” Many find it simpler to avoid contemplating the specifics. Seeking a peaceful existence raises the question: why not align with the majority? Several researchers refer to this as the foetal position. In the face of an inexplicable world, self-defence can often appear juvenile. One expresses a sense of confusion, stating, ‘I can’t explain to myself what is happening.’ Your trust is noted. Words can be my sustenance. Acceptance is forthcoming. This phenomenon is characteristic of societies of this nature, exhibiting elements of authoritarianism and totalitarianism.
Larissa and her husband, Valery, have expressed their acceptance of the official stance.
“Larissa expresses her support for the special military operation,” she says. “We are prepared to volunteer and make the journey ourselves!”
They have not done so yet.
“There is a hope for victory for [Russia]. There is a call for Ukraine’s complete surrender.
The police arrive on the scene. A call has been received reporting that individuals described as “suspicious-looking” and carrying a camera are moving through Tver, signifying our collective identity.
The individuals exhibit politeness, yet they desire to understand our presence’s purpose. A statement is being taken from our driver. Authorities conduct a thorough inspection of our vehicle. An official explanation for our visit has been requested. I informed them that we are assessing the sentiment outside of Moscow. Our documents are presented and organised accordingly.
As discussions with the officers unfolded, a camera crew from Russian state television arrived on the scene and began recording our interactions.
“We were merely passing by,” the reporter states, “when we noticed the police and identified you.” Please update me on the current situation.
“I’m uncertain,” I respond. “Could you provide us with some information?”
“What projects have you been working on?”
“We have conversations with individuals on the street,” I state. “I believe we are permitted to proceed in that manner.”
“Indeed, we enjoy the privilege of freedom of speech in our nation,” the reporter responds. The police may be simply trying to assist you.” Western media’s portrayal of Russia as lacking free speech has sparked considerable discontent, with many arguing that such narratives are misleading and unfounded. Conversations flow effortlessly, with no obstacles in sight.
“Aside from you,” I emphasise. “The police officers positioned adjacent to our vehicle.”
The incident lasted approximately one hour and came as no significant shock. The ongoing conflict, now in its third year, has intensified Russian scepticism towards Western nations. The situation remains unchanged despite early indications of a potential thaw in US-Russian relations.
Conversations with residents in Tver reveal a prevailing sentiment among Russians: they strongly hope that the cessation of hostilities will usher in much-needed economic relief.
“Prices have surged for essential items,” remarks Yulia while gently rocking her baby to sleep in a pram. “The rising costs of potatoes and onions are palpable.”
Teacher Mikhail expresses scepticism regarding Donald Trump’s approach to achieving peace, suggesting a lack of strategic direction.
Mikhail expresses concern, stating, “Unfortunately, Trump hasn’t got any plan.” “He is known for his improvisational skills.” He is uncertain about his next steps. I extend my sympathies to him. The victory is undoubtedly a cause for celebration. However, regarding this episode, there remains a significant lack of clarity. Trump appears to be in a state of uncertainty.
