The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported the first detection of fragments of the West Nile virus in mosquitoes within the United Kingdom.
A study conducted by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) alongside the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) has revealed the presence of genetic material in mosquitoes gathered in Britain during 2023.
West Nile virus is a vector-borne disease that primarily affects birds and is commonly transmitted through mosquitoes that feed on these avian hosts. In uncommon instances, the virus can be transmitted to humans by mosquitoes.
A spokesperson for the UK Health Security Agency stated that the risk to the general public remains “very low,” though guidance for healthcare professionals will be provided.
